If budget is a concern, go with Ubiquity, you can use a VM for your controller. You need to be aware of best practices when working with ubiquiti: Build a controller and leave it alone. Installing it on the laptop of the week and then reinstalling every time you go on site is unacceptable for a professional deployment. Configure DNS and DHCP properly so that unifi.localdomain.suffix (as handed out by DHCP) points to your controller, and configure option 43 with the IP for your controller. Run a recent version of the controller so you get the latest firmwares on your AP's! The version on the disc is worthless! That's really it, I have dozens of Unifi's scattered across the globe in two different clouds, one is a VPN based infrastructure, the other controller is accessible over the internet. Both are rock solid. ====== ROUTER CHARTS ====== From: http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/bar/74-wan-to-lan?task=archiveon WAN to LAN Throughput IxChariot - throughput.scr ====== fry basket antenna ====== From: http://kk.org/streetuse/archives/2006/08/fryer_basket_antenna.php Lots of low-tech household items have been used to boost wi-fi signals, starting with Pringle cans and upward. But none have been able to match the decibel gains offered by a Chinese fry basket. ====== Gigabit Wireless? Five 802.11ac Routers, Benchmarked ====== From: http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/wi-fi-802.11ac-router,3386-14.html Asus R6-AC66U Then there’s Asus, which won this contest hardly breaking a sweat. The company simply out-engineered its competition and came up with a best-in-class feature set. Even more amazing is that the RT-AC66U accomplished this in essentially a first-generation product and delivered it at a price point that handily bests its closest competition. For all of the above, we believe the RT-AC66U deserves our infrequently-bestowed Elite award.
